Illustrator Starting Work
I started my work off by creating a new A3 Document, this was very similar to the way you would create a new document in photo-shop. All you have to do is select the size paper you want then name your document and make sure the colour mode is on CYMK. Once the new document was loaded I created 4 new layers and named them each separately. As you can see I named them as shapes as next I will be showing you how to create a shape. The first shape I made was a square, to create this you need to select the rectangle tool, once selected you hold down shift and drag with the lift mouse button held down. This turns the rectangle into a square, one thing you have to remember is to not to let go of the left click mouse button before you lifting the shift button. If done that way your square will turn back into a rectangle. After creating the square I moved onto showing you how to move that square onto different layers. Firstly, you need to make sure that the object is selected then once selected on your layers you will see a coloured square appear, this should match the colours being displayed on the square. Once you have selected the right object you can drag the little coloured square you can drag it to each separate layer and this will move the object between each layer. After showing this I moved onto making a rectangle this is made the same as the square but you don't have to hold down shift. Next up is making a circle, to do so you need to hold down your left click mouse button on the square icon and once selected a new tab should appear. This tab will allow you to select the object you want to make next and for me this is creating a circle. To create a circle, like the square you will need to hold down shift when creating the circle. This will create you an equal circle. After finishing the circle I moved onto creating a triangle, to create this you will need to select the polygon tool, once selected all you will need to do is click on a blank space on your screen. Once clicked a new tab will appear asking you how many sides you will want and obviously you will need 3 sides. To enlarge the triangle you will need to hold down shift and drag the triangle from the corner. Holding down shift will keep the triangle equal while you are enlarging it. Down below there will be a video displaying what I have just spoke about .
Exporting A PNG
To export a PNG, you will need to have completed your work and saved it. Once done that you will be able to export you work as a PNG. To export your work you will need to go to file , then export, then export as. This will then make the software produce you with a new tab, this tab will allow you to choose where you want your new PNG to be placed and exported too. Once clicked okay a new tab will appear and you will want to click the highest PPI you can and then click okay. This is how to export your work as a PNG.
Re-Creating Toy Story Logo
I started off by creating a blank document, then I decided to add the original image of the toy story logo into this blank document. This will then make it easier for me when re-creating it. It will mean I won't have to keep swapping tab to look at the original logo. My first step was creating the "T", I made the "T" out of two rectangles. To join the two rectangles together I used the tool "Path-Finder", this tool allows you to add two objects together and also make multiple object be selected as one. But in my case I needed to join the two objects together, as you can see in the video all I had to do was selected the two objects and click on the path finder tool. This then made the two shapes into a "T". To angle the two edges down, you have to select the direct selection curser, this allows you to move only one corner at a time. Giving me the Toy story's "T" look on my own work. Next I moved onto creating the "O", this was made out of two circles one big one and one small one. To join the two objects together I used the path finder tool again. Once joined I used the direct selection tool to delete the inner circle giving me the letter "O". Finally, I moved onto creating the letter "Y", this was made out of 3 rectangles, each joined by the path finder tool. To get the distinctive "Y", Toy Story have used I had to select the direct selection tool and move each side of the rectangle , so that is symbolises the "Y". After completing the word "TOY", I moved onto creating the red square under neath the word "TOY". To change colour of each individual object there are colour boxes displayed on the top menu bar, once clicked it will allow you to change the colour of the object selected. Moving back the rectangle under neath the word "TOY". To create the abnormal shape I used the direct selection tool to move each corner of the rectangle and overall change the shape completely.
After completing the top half of the films logo, I moved onto creating the "STORY"text located in the red square. I started by making the T, this was made with two rectangles, then I moved onto creating the O , this was made with two circles. After came a tricky letter, this was the letter R, the R was made out of two rectangles and one circle on the top. To join this I used the path finder, but I struggled to keep the little circle visible in the R. That was one of the problems I ran into. Then came creating the Y, this was made out of 3 rectangles and I used the direct selection tool to make the top of the Y's straight. Finally, came the S this was a very tricky one as I wasn't sure how to go about making it. In the video you can see me try different ways but the way I did it was using the paintbrush tool and create a S myself. This didn't really look similar to what the toy story Logo did but as it was my first attempt I was happy with it. After completing all letters I moved onto putting it all into the red square. To hopefully resemble the Toy Story Logo. But unfortunately I wasn't too happy with it so I decided to go with the text tool. To use the text tool you need to first select the tool then click on the blank space of the document. Once clicked you will be able to type whatever you want. So for me I would need to type "story", I did so in full capitals. To select each letter individually when typing text all you need to do this click on the text you have just wrote. Once highlighted click on the option create outlines, this will enable you too ungroup the text and select it Individually. To ungroup the text you will need to go to the object tab located in the menu bar at the top of the document. Once selected you will see an option to ungroup, click that and you will then be able to click each individual letter. Below you will be able to see two videos, you will need to watch the closest one to this text first then the one below that second.
Principles of Logo Design
Source:https://99designs.co.uk/blog/logo-branding/principles-of-logo-design/
Let's start with simplicity,You want your logo to be as clear and visible as possible while reflecting your aesthetics and conveying your philosophy. For example the nike logo, it is nothing more than a monochrome swoosh. It doesn’t get simpler than that. Next up Is your logo being versatile.your logo needs to be versatile and adaptable to land anywhere. Think of all the places you’ll want to use your logo and make sure it looks good in every single one of them. Moving on we have timeless, A timeless logo looks just as good in ten year as it looks today. Avoid giving in to short-
lived fads when designing your logo and go for a classic look. Another principle is balance and proportion. Humans recognize balanced designs as beautiful. A well-proportioned design will strike a balance between the various elements that make up your logo. Finally, we have scalability. A scalable logo needs to make sense, look good and remain legible at any size—whether it is printed on a tiny business card or on a huge poster. If you include too much detail in your logo it will make it harder to scale down to a small size.
Colour Meaning
I will start with what I have found about different colours and their different meanings. This is something that I am very interested in learning and also be able to understand that each colour means something different which comes in good for when designing logos or any graphic work. As you can see below I have included a photo of what each colour means, Red can be interpreted as fire and blood, Orange combines energy of red and the happiness of yellow. Yellow is the colour of sunshine, joy and happiness and green is the colour of nature, growth and harmony. Blue is the colour of the sky and sea and resembles depth and stability. Purple combines blue and energy of red and resembles royalty and power. The final two are white which resembles light, goodness and innocence and the final one is black which resembles power and elegance. It is so interesting to me that each colour can mean such a different thing. This information is really going to help me when it comes to my work in graphics. It will help me understand when I include a colour it isn't only the colour including it is also the meaning I am adding.
Sketches Of Logos
Each sketch I have tried to include something different, the two sketches on the right are similar but different at the same time. Once includes a border and one doesn't. Out of the two I feel like the top right sketch is the better out of the two and I would be interested to see how it differs when I take it to adobe illustrator. There are some bad views I have on this logo I have chosen and this is that it is not simple and there would be too many colours when it comes to designing it and colouring in adobe illustrator. Moving on to the two sketches on the left hand side, out of the two I would use the top left logo this is because it is very simplistic and as an improvement I could add the grim reapers cypher. The logo also includes many features of the principles of logo design. For example it is very simple, It can be versatile, finally it is memorable well at least for me It is. I am looking forward to see where each logo leads to when I take it to adobe illustrate.
My own logo design
For my first logo design I started off by making a blank document, the page size was A3. Once created I started off by using the text tool and typing "Resell Freak" ( This is the name of my company I am creating ). Once the words have been typed out I decided to enlarge them, make sure to hold down shift when doing so as it keeps the text or shape equal to the original dimensions. Once enlarged I highlighted the text and right clicked this loaded up a tab bar that enabled me to select create outlines, once I have clicked that I went to the top menu bar and selected object then clicked on ungroup object. This allows me to select each individual letter of the word. Once I had completed that I decided to make a black outline around the text and make the inside colour white. This will all be explained in a moment. Most completed I decided to enlarge and descale each letter making it overlap one another. Once I was happy with the outcome I used to the path finder tool to make each letter join together in unison . The reason I made a black outline and white inside fill was because it would make it easier for me and the viewers to witness the letters going together. I wanted to achieve simplicity with this design and I think I have achieved that. Each logo created offers an element of simplicity and encourages viewers to remember the logo as it is so simple and sticks in your mind. Therefore making it memorable.
Next up we have an even more simplistic logo. This logo includes the same attributes as the previous logo but this logo does not include the overlapping of each separate letter. I decided to leave each word as they lie, and put an underlining line under the word Resell, then below this line I decided to add the word Freak. Overall I am not a big lover of this logo as I don't find much interesting things to look at. If I was to go back again and re do this logo I would think about adding border line around the logo. Therefore creating a more slick finish and overall improve the quality of the logo. Below you will see two videos, the video on the left will be the video showing you the process of making the logo. The video on the right will show you the upgrades that I have completed to this logo and also the changes I have made to the logo made previous. To create the border around each logo, I used the rectangle tool but I know you would probably think that the rectangle would be a solid colour. But there is an option to use the rectangle tool to create a rectangle with no filled colour. This is the option I choose to use for the two rectangles I used in the video below.
After completing my two sketches I moved onto creating the third. This logo takes a different route than the other logos I have created. I started off by creating a new A3 document and I linked in a new photo that will be used as a template for this logo. Once the image was placed I started by placing down a circle shape, and as you would of been able to see in the video the circle was filled in white, to get rid of this in the colour selection tab you can select transparent, therefore allowing you to see the image that is laid under the circle. Once that was sorted I moved to lowering the opacity of the image this will allow me to clearly see where the outlines lays. Once the opacity is lowered I selected the paint brush tool, and started to draw around the image. Once I completed the outline I moved onto adding some text, the text will display "Resell Freak". My idea for this was to add the text into a shape of a shoe, as you can see in the video I added a photo of a shoe onto my document and added some text. I went through the process of ungrouping the text therefore making it easier for me to fit the text into the shape of the shoe. Once I had finished making the text some what resemble a shoe, I decided to group the text all together and place it onto the grim reapers hand. Another change I added was making the text red, enabling it to stand out more than the text being black. Also if the text was black the text was clash with the outline of the grim reaper. As you can see I was happy with the way the text fitted in with the outline so I had to make some adjustments. These being colouring in the grim reapers hands , therefore making it easier for me to judge where the text needs to be placed. Another adjustment I made was making the text bigger in size. This will help the viewer to read and understand the logo from a further distance. I found that once I completed this logo I wasn't happy with it, there would be too much going on and just seemed to be cluttered. Finally, it did not follow the principle of logo design, giving me the unfortunate news that I won't be carrying on with this specific logo.
Moving onto my final logo design, after looking at all of them this has to be my favourite out of the four. I will tell you after why. I started off my loading in a picture of a shoe outline, this will be used when it comes to placing my text. After loading in the outline I moved over to the text tool and typed the word Resell, I then moved it into place and enlarged the text make sure to hold down shift when doing so. As soon as I found the correct placement I moved onto rubbing out some of the outline of the shoe. This is where the text is going to be placed. As you can see in the video there wasn't I really needed to do with this logo therefore showing me that this logo is very simplistic. After finding the right placement of the word resell, I moved onto placing the word Freak, this will be placed under the word resell. Once I found the correct placement of the word freak, I went back to the eraser tool and erased the outline that is in the way of the word. After finishing that I moved to changing the colour of the word freak to red, as red is a colour I relate to standing out and catching paper by's eyes. Once I changed the colour I went to the paint brush tool and added some extra features. I selected the colour red and added some stars to the shoe, the reason I did so was to create some extra eye catching content and also I think drawing the stars tied the red colour was in very well. After completing both finishing touches, I moved onto the touchy bits and used the paint brush to touch on some bits that would tie the whole logo together nicely. Back to the start where I said this was my favourite logo. It is my favourite logo, because I follows the principles of logo design to a t and I believe that I wouldn't add anything to it if I was to re do it. I think that the whole logo can be so versatile, one of the ideas I had was that on the page where I sell nike shoes I would change the shoe outline to a nike shoe and when I'm selling Adidas shoes I will change the shoe outline to an Adidas shoe. So the logo can be changed effortlessly and also something that can be remembered so easily.
