George Sims

Graphics and Digital Design

Chelmsford College

Why have I joined this course?

Initially I was drawn to the whole designing side of this course but due to the completing the level 2 course there were so many more inviting sides to it, for example the process of choosing what to design and the process of how the idea started to the finishing product. There are many skills I still would like to lean. These include uncovering many different tools that I can use on my work that I might not of know previous. For example, being able to lay one image in another and making the original image a lot more exciting than it once was. Due to the previous year I have spent completing the level 2 course I know quite a few things when it comes to graphic design. Without that year I would be struggling and my list would be full of things that I didn’t know.  For example, I am very familiar with both adobe photo-shop and adobe illustrator. I chose college because I didn’t really get on with school, tests are not really my strong point. Whereas coursework I really feel like it is one of my strong points and I have found something I really enjoy doing. After these two years I aim to find a job in graphic design but if I can’t then I will look at completing more years at a designated graphic design university course. I am mostly interested in uncovering the whole adobe photoshop and illustrator software. The one area I may struggle with is making sure I evidence everything and making sure I don’t miss one step out. With my knowledge from completing the level 2 course I know how important it is to evidence everything and make sure I don’t miss one thing out. To avoid these problems, I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have a pad and pen next to me at all times writing down every step I do when on this course.

What do I want to do after this course?

After college I plan to get a job in the creative media area specifically the graphic design area. This is because I am most interested in this area and I can truly see myself being a graphic designer and hopefully one of the best. If a job doesn’t come into play, I will look at going to university and further my studies into the graphics design area. If I was to complete some form of work experience, I would like to try graphic design and see what it is like in the open world. No one knows what something is like until they try something and that’s why I’m really looking forward to the work experience coming up in the next two years. The goal is to create my own graphic design company or even my own company in any area I go, it is hard work but I feel like to really make a name for yourself this is the path you have to take. My ideal job would be a graphic designer as I have mentioned it is the area that I am most interested in.” Most professional graphic designers have a foundation degree, HND or degree in graphic design or other art and design-based subject. They also need a working knowledge of a desktop design software, such as illustrator, InDesign or QuarkXPress, and image editing packages such as Photoshop.” (Source- https://www.ucas.com/ucas/after-gcses/find-career-ideas/explore-jobs/job-profile/graphic-designer#:~:text=Most%20professional%20graphic%20designers%20have,editing%20packages%20such%20as%20Photoshop.) A university course that I would be interested in is a graphic design course. The course is available at Norwich university. Applicants need across the board b’s to receive a place at this university. Which in my circumstance is good because I am aiming for a distinction and that is equivalent to 3 A grades. I would only take this path if there were no jobs available at the time of my course ending. Another job that I would be interesting in joining is a magazine designer, to achieve this role I would need a strong set of design skills and an excellent understanding of typography and layouts. Finally, I would need the ability to present original ideas as well as work to design briefs. This job sound interesting as it would be something similar to graphic design. It will allow me to create something that the employer would be over really happy with. This course will give me the knowledge of understanding how each software works and how I can use it to better my ability to produce work at a high standard. Also it will give employers the opportunity to see my work and see if I could work for them or not.
