What is Fanta?
Fanta was created in Nazi Germany and owes its existence to ingredient shortages during World War II. In the years leading up to the Second World War, Coca-Cola was growing rapidly in Europe, with the number of crates of Coke sold in Nazi Germany rising from 100,00 to 4.5 million per year between 1933 and 1939. The brand had become so popular that it was picked to be one of the three official main sponsors of the Berlin Olympics in 1936 and was widely seen as a propaganda event for Nazi Leader Adolf Hitler. When the war broke out in 1939, it became hard to transport the syrups and raw materials needed for the production of Coca-Cola from America, due to embargoes on imports into Nazi Reich. In result, Coke ceased to be made in Germany during the war. The creator Max Keith was determined not to give up. He decided to make a new soft drink and gathered together some readily available ingredients. These ingredients were mostly leftovers from other industries. The ingredients included scraps of different fruits. He then cobbled together a drink they called Fanta. This drink became very popular with the German Population. Coca-Cola discontinued Fanta after WW II, but following the launch of several drinks by Pepsi in the 1950s, the brand competed by relaunching Fanta in 1955. At the time citrus fruits became its primary flavour. By the 1970s it had reached global popularity as the drink we know today. (Source-https://www.thesun.co.uk/living/3637320/fanta-nazi-germany/) Below you will be able to see some images, these images include the original Fanta bottles and also the original Fanta advertising. What I find so interesting about them both is how minimalistic they both are, when it comes to designing my own Fanta bottle I think adding some original features and combining those features with new ones will create a bottle that hasn't been seen before. Including original features could help people remember what their first Fanta bottle looked like compared to the latest one. With the Fanta bottle there is no confusion when it comes to identifying what flavour it is, therefore showing me that when it comes to designing my own Fanta bottle I need to create something that can be easily read and displays clearly what flavour the bottle is. For example, I could use relevant illustrations to my chosen flavour therefore helping people understand the flavour I am trying to promote.
Existing Fanta Flavours
There are over 90 different flavours worldwide. Most of them are only available by region in some countries. For example, in Romania (and some other countries), there is "Fanta Shokata" based on the traditional Romanian drink "Socată". This drink is made from Elderberry. In Switzerland and the Netherlands the local fruit, blackcurrant is used to make Fanta as well. Some identical flavours have different names in different markets. The classic orange, for example, was renamed "Fanta Funky Orange" in 2003 for the Nordic countries and Belgium, while other countries have kept the older "Fanta Orange" brand name. As of the year 2005, the Fanta brand has been connected with the word Bambaacha (or Bamboocha), which is often seen in the Fanta commercials. (Source-https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanta). With this research it enabled me to find out how many flavours actually exist and it also gives me a clear perspective on work ahead of me. When it comes to creating my own Fanta flavour I don't want to use an original flavour I want it to be different and unique. There are endless avenues I can venture down in this project. For example, I could combine multiple flavours therefore creating a new unique flavour that hasn't been created before. Below are some of the top ranked flavours Fanta has ever released. As you can see all the Fanta bottles include the colours of that specific flavour. This is something that I could include in my own Fanta bottle. The only change I would make would be to not create the whole Fanta bottle that colour. Although this seems to be the main portion of the Fanta bottles I would like to make a change to that. For example, if I was to create a Fanta flavour that had more than one flavour included I couldn't just use one main colour as the flavour is built off of more than one flavour. What I like about all the Fanta bottles is how simplistic the design is. Going back to the original design of Fanta it is clear to see that they have carried one main characteristic with them and that is how simplistic each individual bottle is. Not only does the design look great is also makes it very easy for customers to identify what flavour each bottle is. This is something that I would want to use for my design, I wouldn't want to create a design that is confusing, I would want to create something that is simplistic and also could tie in with a specific theme. For example, as it is Halloween, I could use this theme for my Fanta Bottle.
Throughout the Fanta bottles it is clear to see there is one specific theme that they always use. This being the main logo then a ring around it and on the bottom right of the ring there is an image of the flavour. Like I mentioned earlier this looks very simplistic and also very easy for customers to recognise what flavour it is. All of the components I have mentioned above I will take into consideration when designing my own Fanta Bottle.
Designers (Secondary Research)
The first Designer I have researched is someone called Tomer Hanuka, his work is built of different illustrations. The first piece of work I have found is
an illustration about a solider that is pouring milk over himself,
this could either be because of a recent bombing or attack
that has taken place in this setting. Due to the background of
Fanta I really thought this resembled it quite well. Starting from
the type of imagery used, a solider and this obviously
resembles the time when Fanta was created, this being
around the time of WW II. Another interesting component I
found is that the solider seems to be pouring milk over himself.
This relates to the story of Fanta as all the ingredients found to
create Fanta were found in a milk factory.
Looking at this illustration really made my ideas flow, for
the Fanta bottle I can include illustrations of the companies
past and where it has got to today. Including a timeline of
sorts. Finally, I really like the use of colours in this illustration,
the colours could be used in my work as a relation to the
flavour of the Fanta. The illustration could be where Fanta
started off then the other side of the Fanta bottle could be
where Fanta is today. Overall this piece of work has really
helped me create some ideas for my work and also gives me
a vision to what illustrations could be included.
The second designer I have found is Andy Warhol, he is most famous for his soup designs.
At the time these soup cans were so different and out there.
The use of colours in these soups cans were the most eye
catching. All of these soup cans were made for tomato soup,
out of the four cans on the right, the top left can makes the
most sense for a tomato soup can. But I suppose at the time
you could really use any colours and people would be drawn
to it. This gives me some ideas for my own Fanta bottle. I
could include retro looking illustrations. Therefore it gives
the bottle I am going to create some heritage and also
provides memories for those who remember the old Fanta
bottles. Another key component I like about this soup
design is how clear the design looks. Don't get me wrong
some of the other colour ways could so some improving but
looking at the top left can I can really tell what the can is
promoting and selling. I truly believe that this is a key
component to any product. A product needs a label that can
sell itself and that something that I want to include when it
comes to creating my own Fanta bottle. Finally, I find the style
to be very unique and following a trend of being simplistic.
The design follows the unique set of the designer and you
would instantly know that the cans were his work.
The third designer I have found is Olly Moss, his illustrations are very punchy and unique.
What I like about the design is that the designer has used
an original image and turned it into a two piece image if you
know what I mean. Now I have seen this piece of work it has
got my idea cap working, I could use this technique as a
centre piece of my Fanta bottle. For example, for the chosen
flavour, lets say its orange I could get an outline of an orange
and fill it with conveyor belts. On these conveyor belts there
will be packaged orange flavoured Fanta bottles. Therefore,
showing the process of manufacturing this certain Fanta
bottle. Another feature I like about the work on the right is
the use of colours. The image seems to only include one main
colour but the designer has changed the brightness levels
of that certain colour. This could be another feature that I
could add to my work, I could choose the flavour of my Fanta
bottle and only include that certain colour in my illustrations.
The only change would be the shade of the colour, therefore
showing a depth to the Fanta bottle. Finally, with this
specific designer he has a lot of individual style that goes
into each illustration. This means that if I was to further my
Fanta bottle range I could include a different style for each
bottle. This also creates a collector's bottle as each bottle
would follow a specific theme, the only difference would be
the style.
The fourth designer I have found is Jessica Hische, her work is based off typography. This
type of design can come in very handy for when it comes to
designing my own Fanta bottle. The feel I get from her
relates to fairs and circuses. This could be a topic that I
touch on when it comes to designing my Fanta bottle. With
my current knowledge I am unaware of any circus themed
Fanta bottles, therefore highlighting an avenue I could explore.
Another feature I am fond of in her work is the illustrations
she has included along side her typography. It somewhat
tells a story, and I think that telling a story with your work
is very important. If I was to include this type of typography
in my work I would aim it towards the younger generation.
In the world at the moment fairs and circuses have been
unable to run, so creating a Fanta bottle that tells a story
of going to a fair could be an important factor for the younger
generation. Finally it is clear to see that the designers style
of work is distinctive to her, so to create something similar
that is distinctive to me would be my goal if I was to use this
inspiration for my work.
The fifth designer I have found is Camille Walala, her designs are very in your face and eye-catching. Due to the unconventional design, it instantly
catches your vision. This is something that I could include
in my Fanta bottle. Something that is not seen in day to day
life. Something that you look at and remember. Also, a
design that can instantly tell you what it is by just looking at
it. I relate her work to a form of doodling, combining a lot of
different styles of illustrations into one. Another feature I like
about her design is how different it is and the way that she
can combine a lot of different colours into one piece of work.
The only draw back I can think of is if I include too many
colours it could make the design confusing and draw the
attention away from what the Fanta bottle actually is.
Although that might be a problem at the start of designing I
would set myself some colours, these colours would be the
ones that I would use throughout the design and I would
not allow myself to use any other colour. Therefore this
stops the problem that I might run into if I didn't set myself
colours to use. Finally, I find her style very fascinating, each
piece is different. To accomplish that look for my own design
I would need to think of random shapes, styles and even
illustrations to make my own work fit in Camille's region.
The sixth designer I have found is Shepard Fairly, all of his work is based off illustrations, the
work to the right is an illustration describing the 2020 American
Elections. Looking at his work it is clear to see that he has
one main focus point and the rest is information that
describes that main focus point. This gives me some
inspiration of my Fanta bottle as I could create a propaganda
Fanta bottle. I could some what re-design the original
Fanta bottle and make it resemble what I think it should
look like. I could include news bulletins and the main focus
would obviously be the Fanta logo. Another feature I like
about his work is his ability to use different shades of colours.
On the image on the right it looks like he has only used a few
colours but by only using a few colours he has made the
colours different shades. Therefore adding different effects to
his work and overall changing the appearance. Overall this
style of work intrigues me, and makes me interested to find
out more. This is something that I would want to work on with
my Fanta bottle. I would want someone to look at it and make
them want to find out more. I would want the person to feel
intrigued by what I have created.
The Seventh designer I have found is Saul Bass, his work seems to be built of loads of different
shapes and styles. As you can see in this photo there is a lot
happening at once. However in his work he has been able
to make something readable and eye catching. This is
something I aspire to have in my work. One of my main aims is
to make my work eye-catching. To do this I could include
bright colours. These bright colours could be the flavours
included in my Fanta bottle. Therefore I am tying everything
together, i would make my Fanta bottle eye catching but also
make it explain the contents of inside flavour. After looking at
his work for a good amount of time it is clear to see that it is
built of many factors, these factors include typography,
illustrations and bright colours. All of these combined, makes
a strong statement. If I was to follow this design pattern I
would use the Fanta Logo as my main typography and use
similar illustrations that explain Fanta as a whole. These
illustrations could include the start of Fanta, the problems it
has run into over the years and also where it is today.
The Eighth Designer I have found is David Carson, His work is very interesting, he has an ability to combine multiple different objects into one
main focus point. As you can see on the right, there is a
front cover and this front cover was designed by David
Carson. What I like about it is, it has an edgy feel and what
I mean by that is, that you don't commonly see this type
of design. This leads me to think about how I could use this
design on my own Fanta bottle. As you can see the page on
the right has a main focus point. There being the man and I
would make mine the Fanta logo. To accompany the main
Fanta logo I could use different types of typography and also
different images. This would then give me that edgy feel I
am looking for. It is clear to see that all his work is unique
and also mind blowing how he can combine multiple
different images and typography into one main page. In
other pieces of work he uses a wide variety of colours, not
at one moment do they look over powering to one another.
This is something that I could include on my Fanta bottle, but
I would have to be careful about what colours I include as
I don't want it to include so many colours it makes it look
confusing.
The ninth designer I have found is Gail Anderson, her work is like something I have never seen
before. She has an ability to join together all these different
little illustrations and some how make them all combine into
one main master piece. As you can see in her work she
mainly focuses on one main portion. This is the portion that
stands out the most. This being the main typography in Red.
I can imagine she started with that main piece of typography
and worked her way outwards. Mainly thinking of new unique
patterns to fill her page. I could use this style of work on my
Fanta bottle. I could do so by using the main Fanta logo as my
starting point and work my way outwards with little illustrations
that would fill the rest of the Fanta bottle. Another feature I
like about her work is these bold illustrations popping in from
the edges. As soon as you seen the page you can instantly
see these bold illustrations. This could be another key feature
that could be added to my Fanta logo. The only problem I
might encounter is by making some illustrations bolder it is
taking away from the main focus point. The main focus point
being the logo. As soon as you see the Fanta bottle the main
focus should be the Logo.
The final designer I have found is Carolina Rodriguez Fuenmayor, her work like the last designer is very interesting. In the image there is a woman,
but the picture doesn't just show a woman it has 3 different
scenarios going on. Firstly, we have the woman smoking,
then we have another image located in her upper torso,
finally from that image we have smoke rising from the
shack and this smoke builds her neck. Overall, the
designer has made an image that has 3 different scenarios
going on. To be honest you could look at this for ages,
studying all the intricate details going on. This is something
that could work quite well when it comes to my Fanta
bottle. To be able to create something that has an image
inside of an image would be amazing. It would not only
make people look twice it would also make people study
the Fanta bottle. My idea could be to add an illustration
off the first Fanta bottle being made inside of the factory.
Therefore it is showing people where the drink originated
from and also how this drink they are drinking was made
back in the 1940's.
Primary Research
The first design I have found is a label located on a wine bottle. This wine bottle differs from the normal ones you would see. As you can see it with holds multiple
illustrations. They describe the wine and also peace within the
world. I think looking at this illustrations really shows how the
designer has created a message with an image. This is something
that I would want to use when it comes to designing my own
Fanta bottle. I would want it to tell a story, but this story will not be
told in words it shall be told through illustrations like you can see on
the bottle. Another feature I like about the wine bottle is the colouring
used. Each colour has a meaning and the use of combining all the
colours of the rainbow promotes happiness. Therefore this could mean
the designer is trying to create happiness with not only the wine but
in the whole world. Finally, I really like the simplicity used within the
design. Not only does the design mean a lot it doesn't look
congested therefore the design is not changing the perception away
from what the bottle includes.
I have found another design on another wine bottle. This design differs from the previous one
because it promotes something entirely different. The bottle that can be
seen promotes love and romance. Therefore this gives me the idea
to create a Valentine Fanta bottle. I don't believe there has ever been
a Valentine Fanta bottle. Therefore I am entering a new market and
also I would be aiming it at a specific day and target audience. Another
feature I like about this design is the illustrations used. Not only does
it tie everything together. It could also be a collector item. Maybe this
bottle is only released at a certain time of year. Overall the bottle is
very eye catching and by using the colour red, this makes your eyes draw
to it. Like I have mentioned before adding colours is an important
factor to my Fanta bottle. So for me adding bright eye catching colours
will help people be attracted to the Fanta bottle. The only change I would
consider making to this bottle would be adding more information on
what the product actually is. Looking at it I can see that it is Malbec. But
for all I know Malbec is a fruit drink. There is no information straight
away that informs me that this is alcohol.
